Hamden Cup Campaign to Support IRIS' Soccer & Wellness Programming
⚽🏆📣Four years ago, two over-40 Hamden soccer teams started an annual Hamden Cup game to determine the best geriatric team in Hamden, CT. The annual game, which features the Hamden Rovers of the CASL and Hamden United of the SASL, has ended in two Hamden Rovers victories and one draw--which was allowed to remain a draw because both teams' aged warriors were too tired to engage in a penalty shootout. This year, however, Hamden United swears it will get a win...but that will be determined on Sunday, October 13.
Yet, when they started the Hamden Cup in 2016, both teams' players stated their desire to do more than just lift a trophy...and avoid injuries and subsequent orthopedic bills. They wanted to help a worthy cause. They were aware that New Haven's Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS) organization ran a soccer program that assisted its clients' integration to American life through soccer programming. This programming worked with male and female clients--both youth and adults--and has since expanded to include wellness programming outside of soccer.
To help IRIS' soccer programming, both teams collected and donated gently used soccer equipment to IRIS for each Hamden Cup game. The teams also solicited monetary contributions to IRIS. This year, however, both teams are asking for broader support for IRIS' soccer and wellness programming. Please use this opportunity to make a monetary donation for the Hamden Rovers' and Hamden United's fourth annual Hamden Cup game to support IRIS. Now, more than ever, is your support needed to make refugees and immigrants feel welcome in this country.
